Phoenix des Lumières is a digital and immersive art centre that opened in January 2023 inside the historic Phoenixhalle in Dortmund, a former steelworks hall. It follows the same concept as the original Atelier des Lumières in Paris — projecting large-scale, animated artwork across every surface of a cavernous industrial space, set to music.
An Industrial Setting
The venue sits on the site of a former steel plant, and the contrast is part of the experience — rusted industrial silhouettes from the old works stand alongside a thoroughly modern digital art space. On-site there's parking, self-service ticket kiosks, a café for a quick bite and coffee before the show, and a small gift shop.
The Space Itself
Inside, the hall is enormous, with walls and floor functioning as a single continuous canvas of projected light. The architecture includes curves, hidden corners and circular zones at the centre, letting the visuals flow underfoot as much as across the walls — closer to standing inside a moving painting than watching a screen.
The Programme
Phoenix des Lumières runs rotating shows, with past and upcoming programming including Monet-inspired visuals and a dinosaur-themed exhibition. The standout show is The Little Prince: The Immersive Odyssey, told entirely without dialogue — just light and a musical score carrying the story.
The Atmosphere
The venue is deliberately calm — no rushing, no noise beyond the show itself. Visitors can sit on benches or lie on soft mats in the corners of the room, settling in fully rather than moving through quickly. Each show runs roughly an hour.
